Frequently Asked Questions

The effect of diet on dental health

Diet is a major factor in controlling tooth decay. Basically, what is healthy for your body is also healthy for your teeth. Just as a diet high in refined carbohydrates is bad for your body; it also contributes to dental caries (tooth decay). The frequency of exposure of your teeth to carbohydrates is an important factor - increased frequency usually correlates with increased decay rate.

Prevention of tooth decay

Daily cleansing of the teeth through brushing (2 minutes twice a day) and flossing, a balanced diet, and regular scheduled dental visits are the best prevention for dental caries (decay).

What will my first appointment consist of?

Your first appointment is a "get acquainted" visit. Radiographs, periodontal charting, and a thorough intra-oral exam will be accomplished, so that a treatment plan for future visits can be formulated.

At what age should my child first visit the dentist?

Most dental and medical professionals agree that a child's first dental visit should be at one year of age. Early detection of potential problems and "fun" visits at an early age prepares the child for future encounters and child dental health can be discussed with the parents.

How do dental X-rays compare to other sources of radiation?

Dental radiographs produce small amounts of radiation compared to other sources. For more information: visit the ada website

What effects can smoking and chewing tobacco have on my oral health?

Tobacco in any form is harmful to the teeth and oral tissues. At best, tobacco use contributes to periodontal (gum) disease and poor healing, and at worst to oral cancer.

Why do I need a crown?

There are several reasons why a tooth might need a crown. A crown splints a tooth weakened by fractures, decay, and/or large existing restorations. Also, a porcelain crown can restore the appearance of discolored teeth.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, is a process of removing diseased tissue from within the tooth and replacing it with an inert material that the body accepts so the tooth can be retained.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium fixture that takes the place of the root of the tooth, capable of supporting a variety of tooth replacements ranging from a single crown to a complete denture.

What is the process of a dental implant?

The titanium fixture is placed by a surgeon. It is allowed to "integrate" into the bone (bone grows around the implant to secure it). The healing period is usually 3 to 8 months. Then the restoration or tooth replacement is placed by the general dentist by doing an impression of the implant. A crown and abutment is fabricated by a dental lab and seated 3 weeks later.

What does my insurance pay?

We try our best to know the details of your plan, but ultimately it is your responsibility to know your plan provisions and limitations. It is a contract between your employer and the insurance company even if we are a preferred provider.
